Lukla - Chukung Ri

Chhkung valley served predominantly as the Yak Pastures for the villages nearby and it had no permanent settlement. With the growing popularity of Island Peak climbing, Chhukung was the best stop over for the climbers to acclimatize themselves. Thus Chhukung started serving as a Lodge village for everest trekkers willing to scale the Island Peak. As Island Peak requires a technical climb, the climbers opting for a non-technical climb can give a try to Chhukung Ri.

Tour Details

The trek follows the same classical route to Everest Base camp till Dingboche from where you take the trails following through stone-walled fields and Imja Khola. Finally you enter through the Glacier moraines and forge ahead to Bibre. You can find the small huts made which are made for the settlements of yak and other domesticated animals during summer. The path to Chhukung is waved by the gigantic view of Mt Amadablam and the neighboring snowy peaks.

Visiting Chhukung valley offers you the best opportunity to scale the quieter peak than Kalapatthar and Everest Base Camp. The peak is not a bigger one, thus it will be a non-technical climb.  Having ascended the peak, you will be having the spectacular view of the mountain peaks in Everest Himalayan ranges. The view of Mt Makalu 8463m, Baruntse 7220m, Cho Oyu 8201m , Lhotse 8561 , Island Peak 6189m and other several peaks like Thamserku, Tabuche Peak, Cholatse including the beautiful view of Imja Lake.

There is always the option to extend this trek to Island Peak Climbing, Everest base camp or the Everest Three passes trek.

Though trekking is even suitable for the beginners,  it is desirable to be physically and mentally fit for this climb as it can be mentally strenuous as well as physically. The views of the mountains are spectacular which should keep you in good spirits to plough on with the trek. For those who aspire to begin with a technical peak climbing in the future, this is the best starting point for you. With Himalayan Circuit we say aim high and climb higher.

Itinerary

Day 01Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2800m) and trek to Phakding (2650m)

An early half and hour flight will take you to Lukla, at 2804 meters, landing at Tenzing and Hillary Airport (named after Everest’s first summiteers). In Lukla you can enjoy a hot tea in the village, buy last-minute trekking utensils and take photos, while our crew prepares our trekking equipment. At last, the journey begins! Descending toward the Dudh Kosi River, you head towards your overnight stay at Phakding.

Day 02Trek from Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3440m)

Enjoy an orientation walk of Zurich’s OLD TOWN, Switzerland’s center of banking and commerce. Then, leave Zurich and start your Swiss adventure. You’ll quickly discover that Switzerland isn’t just home to the Alps, but also to some of the most beautiful lakes. First, stop at the foot of the Jura Mountains in the picturesque town of Biel, known as Bienne by French-speaking Swiss, famous for watch-making, and explore the historical center. Next, enjoy a scenic drive to lakeside Neuchâtel, dominated by the medieval cathedral and castle. Time to stroll along the lake promenade before continuing to stunning Geneva, the second-largest city in Switzerland, with its fantastic lakeside location and breathtaking panoramas of the Alps.

Day 03Namche Bazaar Acclimatization Day

Today we are acclimatizing to the high altitude by ascending and descending in steps to adjust to the now-thinning air. The saying “climb high, sleep low” is the surest way for the body to adapt. The best suited for low-oxygen environments are the Sherpa people. We will visit a museum about this fascinating people and learn about their traditions and customs. We will also see Mount Everest for the first time here, behind the statue of Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on the world’s first Everest ascension. Tenzing is regarded as one of the bravest and most heroic Himalayan climbers of all time.

Day 04Trek begins from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3867m)

Today we begin the trek with awe-inspiring, unforgettable views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Cholatse, Kantaiga, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. This trek is quite an easy walk from Namche to Phunki, followed by a three-hour ascent towards Tengboche.

Day 05Trek to Dingboche (4350m) 4.5 hours walk

Leaving Tengboche behind, we’ll cross another exciting wire suspension bridge over the Imja Khola, and then ascend to Pangboche. Thousands of mani stones embellish the way — large boulders carved and painted with Buddhist mantras. The uphill trek continues to the quaint Sherpa village of Dingboche, offering spectacular views of Lhotse, Island Peak, and the steep ice summit of Ama Dablam. We’ll trek slowly today, easing safely into the thinning air.

Day 06Acclimatization day in Dingboche

A day spent in Dingboche is important as your body requires to adapt the thinning air.Tomorrow you are going to hike to a higher altitude to Chhukung valley.

Day 07Trekking from Dingboche to Chhukung 4730m

Chhukung has been popular as a stop over among the mountaineers heading to  the Island Peak clmbing.  A trek for about 3-4 hours is required to reach Chhukung from Dingboche. As you are scaling to a higher altitude, today we are going to hike slowly and acclimatize our body with the thinning air. The village is sparsely populated, thus the settlement is very thin. The Island Peak seems ready to welcome the adventurers as the magnificent peak is clearly seen from Chhukung.

Day 08Trekking from Chhukung to Chhukung Ri Base Camp: 5087m

So,you are going to take the trail behind the Makalu Lodge. After leaving the lodge, you will be crossing a small stream and start the rocky climb to the Chhukung Ri Base Camp. The Landscape is really stunning enough to make your trek memorable. After a slow hiking for about 3-4 hours, you will reach the Base camp, where you will overnight in a tented camp. You can enjoy with trekking mates to raise up the camp and immerse yourself with the beautiful and quiet Nature. A day spent here in Base is important for acclimatization. Some even take Chhukung Ri as a day expedition from Chhukung valley, but having spent a day in the camping site is going to be helpful, basically minimizing the risks of AMS.

Day 09Acclimatization in Chhukung Base Camp

Today the day is devoted for further acclimatization. The air level is getting thinner, so you need to adjust the increasing altitude. Tomorrow you are going to scale above 5000m. Make yourself prepared to go to the higher altitude. Today just enjoy the best view of the snow capped highest mountains of the world.

Day 10Climb Chhukung Ri 5546m and trek back to Chhukung Valley

Today’s day we are going to utilize the acclimatization. Chhukung Ri is a rocky mountain resembling Kala Patthar. From the top of Chhukung Ri, you can have the parallel view of the Imja-Tse, Island Peak, Mount Ama Dablam , Makalu 8481m , and Nuptse 7861m. . A day spent in Chhukung with a day hike to Chhukung Ri can gear you up for the next adventure in the Himalayas.

Day 11Trek from Chhukung Valley to Tengboche

From Chhkung we take the trail down to Dingboche and continue to Pangboche village where we visit the oldest monastery in the region. The legend says it holds the scalp and bones of a Yeti. Leaving the mountains behind us, we descend back to Tengboche.

Day 12Tengboche to Manju

Today the trek takes us along the river and hike up through birch and rhododendron forest to Tengboche. Kwangde, Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kantega and Thamserku are just a few of the Himalayan giants to be seen. From Tengboche we descend to the bridge over the Dudh Kosi at Phunki Tenga, where there are water driven prayer wheels, before making our way back to Manju crossing after Namche Bazar.

Day 13Manju to Lukla

Today you return to Lukla. Take this time to reflect on your experiences and celebrate with your fellow trekkers: making it all the way to Chhukung Ri Peak and back is a great accomplishment!

Day 14Flight back to Kathmandu

Enjoy the last glimpse of the mountains before we fly back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, we will pick you up and drive you back to your hotel.
