What to Expect

You will wake up with your host family and participate in their morning routine and household activities. We can guarantee this will be very different from what you are used to.

Early in the morning is the perfect time to take a walk through the neighbourhood and meet the people. Do not be surprised if the elders call on you to take a sip of tea. This warm hospitality will follow you everywhere you go.

Breakfast will usually be served between 9-10 am. This local meal is made from fresh products and will consist of steamed rice (Bhat), lentils soup (Daal), vegetables with hot and sour pickles. Take this opportunity to enhance your cooking skills and join in with the family in the kitchen. They will be more than happy to share with you their family recipes and secrets.

After you have eaten you will be visiting a local school to introduce yourself and learn how the schools operate. The children will be excited to see you and we recommend you integrate yourself accordingly and get to know the children. There will be English speaking teachers in the school who will provide information on the education system, culture and the community. Visiting a school is the perfect opportunity to get to know the village and the people.

In the afternoon you can explore the villages and get a feel for the environment. Climate change is among many other concerns of people globally and this is no different here in Nepal. A huge part of your trek will be to educate and teach locals how they can protect and look after their beautiful surroundings.  Activities will vary depending on the season but rest assured, there will be plenty of activities for you to choose from.

The evenings will be mostly spent with your host family reflecting on the day and having quality time with locals. Save some energy for the evening as you may find yourself learning traditional dance, listening to traditional music and if you are feeling brave, some singing! The children will also want you to play with them or help with their homework. Dinner will be served in the evening, much like with breakfast, feel free to help out and learn more about the local cuisine.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival to Local Community, Nepal

Spend the day arriving and getting acquainted with the community you will live in for the next 4 nights. A local guide will be there to greet you and introduce you to your host family. Take some time to get to know your host family and settle in. Take the day to embrace the culture and have an understanding of their way of life. If time allows, in the evening the groups can meet and explore the village.
There will be availability for short hikes with your guide to explore the area, take advantage of this opportunity to embrace your surroundings.

Day 02Helping to the Local Farmers

You will combine your knowledge of environmental skills and understanding with that of the locals. You will immerse yourself in a distinct culture and how the village functions. Bring with you ideas on how you can make an impact and improve the environment.

You may find yourself explaining how you contribute to the environment in your home country and how they could adapt their way of life. Equally, you may find yourself learning new techniques from the elders.

Due to the nature of Nepal and how we live, often you will find some basic habits that are the norm to you, not to them. For example, in western culture, it is customary to always wash your hands before a meal. In Nepal, whilst hygiene isn’t an issue, per se, there are always ways to improve and locals will appreciate your input.

In the evening you will spend time with your host family with a delicious traditional meal. If you have the energy, there is the option to meet with your guide and others to have a tour of the area at night

Day 03Teaching in a Local School

Don’t panic! There will be English speaking teachers there also. After breakfast, around 10 am, you will head to the local school. This is the perfect opportunity to enhance your resume by teaching local children about other cultures and habits from your homeland with regard to the basics, cleaning your teeth and washing your hands to the bigger environmental issues such as recycling and littering.
Nepal suffers from water pollution due to sedimentation and discharge of industrial effluents into the water supply. We recommend you do a little research before attending school. Now whilst this is not an issue everywhere, we want to educate the children of today on how they can look after their planet for the next generation.
In the evening return home to your host family for a home cooked meal and reflect on your day. Join in with singing and dancing or even help out with the children’s homework.

Day 04Looking Forwards: Excursion to The Village

After breakfast, you will come together in your group and develop a plan that locals can follow to protect their environment. This can be as basic or as complex as you like after you have identified the local issues. Remember, in the current global climate, the environment is a top priority for most. Not only are we looking to educate the young but also try and educate the elders. The more people to make a positive change the better for Nepal.

In the afternoon you will present this to the locals in a group and answer any questions they may have. This trek is a two-way return. We want you to have an enriching experience but also we want the locals to benefit from your knowledge and expertise. Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference.

Settle down for the last night with your host family. This would be the perfect time to present your families with token gifts. Children can always benefit from something educational such as pencils, crayons and paper. We strive to do the best for the communities we use for placements.

Day 05Departure to Kathmandu

After breakfast, you will gather all your belongings and say goodbye to your host families. It would also be a good idea to have three things in your mind of what you will take away from this experience. This helps us to know how to improve using the likes and dislikes but also lets the local community know how you have enjoyed your time there. Sign up today and contact us for more information on this trek! It is short but valuable to your own development and that of Nepal’s community. We look forward to hosting you as part of your community experience!!
