EBC - Island Peak

Island Peak Climbing with EBC Tour is an excellent opportunity to climb the magnificent Island Peak – the most popular highest trekking peak in Nepal as well as a trek to Everest Base Camp. Summit of Island Peak is 6,189m /20,305ft or Imja Tse located above the summer settlement of Chhukung and seen from above Dingboche.
The adventure of Island Peak Trek rises miraculously as an Island in a sea of ice surrounded by Lhotse and Lhotse Shar Glaciers. The name – Island Peak Climbing with Everest Base Camp Trek was given by Eric Shipton’s party in 1952 while exploring around Barun Gorge.

Tour Details

First climbed in 1953 by Charles Evan, Alf Gregory, Charles Wylie and Tenzing Norgay as a part of the preparation for climbing the highest trekking peak of the world – Mount Everest. Island Peak Expedition is an attractive summit with highly glaciated West Face rising from the Lhotse Glacier that provides an adventurous climb with striking views of Mt Nuptse 7879m, Mt Lhotse 8501m, Lhotse Middle Peak 8410m and still unclimbed – Lhotse Shar 8383m to it’s North.

To the East lies the magnificent Red granite mass of Mt Makalu 8475m and Cho Polu 6734m. Mt Baruntse 7720m and the majestic Ama Dablam 6856m guard the entrance at the South over a glacial bay in which Island Peak stands. Island Peak Mountaineering with EBC Trek in Nepal is the best way to explore the dramatic landscapes, serene alpine forest, and rich Buddhist religion and culture friendly highland Sherpa communities in the midst of the world’s highest mountains.

Day 07Tengboche - Pheriche (4252m)

A short day’s journey towards Pheriche consists of a trek through forests filled with a variety of lush trees – birch, conifers and rhododendron. This picturesque trail dips down to Devuche, crossing the Imja River before climbing up to Pheriche.

Day 08Rest Day in Pheriche

Today is that the remarkable acclimatization day. There are some breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Pheriche is typically used as a stop for the second acclimatization day. There are various activities to try to to within the area. Tshola Tsho Lake may be a popular destination for trekkers stopping in Pheriche.

Day 09Trek from Pheriche - Lobuche (4930m)

Today’s trail follows the Khumbu Glacier, and offers superb views of the surrounding mountains, especially where the path is forced to rise to cross a tributary glacier. Later in the afternoon, when the sunset colors begin to appear on Everest, from the Gorakshep we drop our baggages after the luck at Gorak Shep we will hike up to the Everest Base camp and explore the EBC and back to the Gorakshep.

Day 11Trek up to Kalapatthar (5545m): for the Sunrise and trek to Dingboche

Kalapatthar 5545m (Black Rock) has been one of the mostly visited attraction in the Everest Region as its well known  stunning sunrise and sunsets over the highest mountain peaks of the world. Thus it is itself unique, as this unique experience can be gained only from  Kalapatthar. From Gorakshep it takes 2 hours to reach there and probably you would like to spend one more hour while viewing the majestic Himalayas just standing in front of you.  Now its nearly 16 km to reach Dingboche from Kalapatthar. Now be started to descend down to Dingboche, it would 1000 meter descend. On the way back you can also visit Dughla, the summer village of Dingboche. It is expected that you will reach DIngboche around 3.00 Pm. Arriving at local tea house, you can take rest and also take a sip of hot coffee.

Day 12Dingboche - Island peak base camp (5150m)

An easy walk for about 2 hours, climbing up gradually to the small settlement of Chukhung. Along the way we have great views of Island Peak. We will then hike up to Island Base camp. Another easy day, the trail crosses the river and follows the valley for approx 3 hours, passing beneath the magnificent south face of Lhotse. Base camp is by the side of the Imja glacier, below steep grassy slopes which mark the start of the climb on Island Peak.

Day 13An Extra day, (reserve day incase of bad weather)

Since we cannot guarantee favorable weather for the scheduled summit day, we’ve allowed an additional day within the schedule. If we are unable to summit the Island Peak on scheduled date thanks to inclemency or another reason, like someone within the group having acclimatization problems, it’s useful to possess an additional day. If the trip goes smoothly, and that we don’t need this spare day, we’ll continue our return journey to Lukla.

Day 14Ascent of island peak (6189m): and Down to Base Camp

Today we will be crossing the gully above the camp; the trail makes a climb for another hour to a narrow ridge, leading on to the glacier. Here it is time to rope-up and put on our crampons as the most interesting part of the climb begins with the glacier crossing. This is followed by the steep snow slope that leads onto the summit ridge. This ridge is wonderfully airy and on reaching the summit we have stunning close-up views of the south face of Lhotse looming over us whilst in the other direction, there are more dramatic mountain views. We descend along the same route, down to base camp.

Day 15Island peak base camp- Pangboche (3950m)

After descending along the trail to Chukhung, we continue on to Dingboche for lunch. It is then another couple of hours to the lovely village of Pangboche.

Day 16Pangboche- Namche (3450m)

Today the trek takes us along the river and hike up through birch and rhododendron forest to Tengboche. Kwangde, Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Kantega and Thamserku are just a few of the Himalayan giants to be seen. From Tengboche we descend to the bridge over the Dudh Kosi at Phunki Tenga, where there are water driven prayer wheels, before making our way back to Namche.

Day 17Namche -Lukla (2800m)

Today is the final day of trekking following the Dudh Kosi back down to Lukla. This last evening in the mountains is the ideal opportunity for a farewell party with the Sherpa guides and porters, where we can sample some change, try Sherpa dancing and look back on a memorable trekking experience.
