Committed to Lord Shiva, Pashupatinath is one of the four most important religious destinations in Asia for worshippers of Shiva. Built in the fifth century and later upgraded by Malla lords, the site itself is said to have existed for over a thousand years when a Shiva lingam was discovered here.
Pashupatinath is the biggest sanctuary complex in Nepal, it stretches across both banks of the Bagmati River and is located just 3km north of Kathmandu city center. The sanctuary is built in the pagoda style and has a number of interesting characteristics including; an overlaid rooftop, four of the sides are canvassed in silver, as well as incredibly intricate and high quality wood carvings. The complex is vast and it contains a number of different sanctuaries, some of which are devoted to a few other Hindu and Buddhist deities.
Close-by, is the sanctuary of Guheshwori which is dedicated to Shiva’s partner, Sati Devi. Many Hindus travel to Pashupatinath to be cremated on the banks of the sacred Bagmati, which later meets the holy Ganges river. It is believed that those individuals cremated here are guaranteed to be reincarnated as a human no matter the sins committed in their past life. Visitors can actually watch these ceremonies, but be warned they aren’t for the faint hearted. Only Hindus are permitted inside the doors of the main sanctuary. The internal sanctum has a Shiva lingam and outside sits a large statue of Nandi the bull, the vehicle of Shiva. There are several Shiva lingam dotted around the compound. The enormous Maha Shivaratri celebration in spring, attracts a huge number of fans from inside Nepal and from India. Pashupatinath Temple is one of the 8 UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu Valley. It is a living cultural heritage site, one of only few in the world. The temple is full of life and energy and here you can observe the active participation of people in various rituals that occur throughout the day.
