The Tamang Heritage Trekking takes you north of the famed Kathmandu Valley, immersing you in one of the most culturally rich regions in Nepal. Soothing hot springs, delicious Nepalese foods, and lovely panoramic views of the Himalayas are just a few of the many delights you’ll experience on your journey. You’ll also trek through Tamang villages, giving you an opportunity to meet the friendly locals. The Tamang people are believed to have migrated from Tibet 3000 years ago, and have thus developed a unique culture, religion, and language based on those Tibetan roots. Unfortunately, they have been disenfranchised by various institutions for centuries. Taking the Tamang Heritage Trek helps support the Tamang people, giving them a source of income.
Tamang Heritage trekking is newly discovered trekking route between Langtang and the Ganesh Himal that will provide you with a thrilling experience. The area is close to the Tibetan border and is rich in culture and traditions. We will experience a gentle circuit passing though charming villages, terraced fields and mountain views all within reach from Kathmandu. On our way we enjoy panoramic views of the nearby peaks and soak in the natural hot springs at Tatopani. Travelling north we will see a local fort, monastery and local architecture of the Tamang homes. This trek also boasts a homestay experience in Birddim to learn about their way of life and local traditions. Sadly, due to an earthquake it has taken time to rebuild the area but we are happy to announce that we can finally conduct tours in this area. This trek can be combined with Classic Langtang Valley Trek, Langtang Helambu Trek, Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, Langtang Ganjala Pass Trek and Ganesh Himal Trek.
Upon your arrival to Kathmandu, be sure to check out the beautiful local temples and find your bearings. If you have the time, we recommend you spend an extra day here to acclimatize and explore the area before we depart on our trek.
Kathmandu has a lot to offer such as the Garden of Dreams, Patan Durbar Square, Kopan Monastery and many more.
Leave Kathmandu early in the morning for a seven-hour drive to the Langtang Valley. The winding road climbs up and provides spectacular landscape views of the Annapurna’s, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal. Afterward, the road slopes downward to the lush, green Trisuli River Valley.
Stretch your legs by ascending to a viewpoint to see the spectacular Ganesh Himal, the Goljang Valley, and the Gosainkunda range. For an hour, descend to the Goljang Valley for lunch. In the afternoon, walk for approximately three hours to get to Gatlang, a lovely Tamang village.
Descend to Thangbuchet and enjoy the view of a beautiful river. After breaking for lunch, climb up, across a hanging bridge, and up some more to reach the town of Tatopani. The name “Tatopani” translates to “hot water” in Nepali, and fittingly so: here, you can enjoy the town’s natural hot springs, which locals believe to have a healing quality.
Ascend to Nagathali Danda, a high and open grassland where you’ll be able to view the Himalayas. On the way, you’ll stop at Brimdang village for a warm lunch. Upon arrival at Nagathali Danda, stop to drink a masala chiya, a special tea prepared by the gompa’s caretaker. Afterwards, continue downward to the Tamang village of Thuman, where its villagers love to sing and dance.
The flat trail eventually slopes downward so that you may descend to Timure, following part of the old trade route to Tibet. After lunch, continue on the trail to Briddim, which is another Tamang village. You’ll stay for the night in a local home. Since lodgings and food are offered at local homes on a rotational basis, you can rest assured that your stay is benefitting the entire community of Briddim.
Take a relaxing, three-hour walk down to Syabrubesi. After lunch, spend the afternoon resting or exploring the town. Syabrubesi sports a variety of shops selling local handicrafts, like colorful shawls and aprons
We will drive back to Kathmandu passing stunning scenery so be sure to have your camera at the ready! Make use of your guide and ask any questions about Kathmandu you may have for your final day(s) not to miss out on anything. Enjoy the last few hours with your group and please note that gratuity is not included in the trek.
As you depart from Nepal we wish you safe travels and hope to see you again. We hope you have enjoyed your time with us and have come away feeling fulfilled and satisfied with your trek.
